Private Chickenpox Vaccination in Bridge of Allan
Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection that commonly affects children but can occur at any age. Although many infections are relatively mild, chickenpox can be uncomfortable, disruptive and occasionally lead to more serious complications.
Right Medicine Pharmacy offers private chickenpox vaccination for children aged one year and over and adults at our Bridge of Allan pharmacy. Weekend appointments are available, making it easier for families and working adults to arrange vaccination at a convenient time.
The service costs £70 in total. Every vaccination is subject to a consultation and clinical suitability assessment by a trained healthcare professional.
What Is Chickenpox?
Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It spreads easily through coughs, sneezes and direct contact with fluid from chickenpox blisters.
The most recognisable symptom is an itchy, spotty rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters before forming scabs. Other symptoms can include:
- A high temperature
- Aches and pains
- Tiredness or feeling generally unwell
- Loss of appetite
- Headaches
Chickenpox usually improves without medical treatment, but it can be more severe in adults, pregnant people, newborn babies and people with a weakened immune system.

Why Consider Chickenpox Vaccination?
Vaccination can reduce the likelihood of developing chickenpox and lower the risk of severe illness. No vaccine provides complete protection in every person, so it is still possible to develop chickenpox following vaccination. However, breakthrough infections are generally expected to be milder.
Parents may consider private vaccination to help protect their child and reduce the disruption that chickenpox can cause to school, childcare and family life. Adults who have not previously had chickenpox or been vaccinated may also wish to discuss protection.
If you are unsure whether you have previously had chickenpox, tell the pharmacy team during your consultation. In some circumstances, further advice or a blood test to check immunity may be recommended before vaccination.
Is Chickenpox Vaccination Available Through the NHS?
Scotland introduced the combined measles, mumps, rubella and varicella vaccine, known as MMRV, into its routine childhood immunisation programme in January 2026. Eligibility and the vaccinations offered will depend on factors including a child’s age, date of birth and previous vaccination history.
The private service may remain appropriate for children or adults who are not covered by the routine NHS offer, subject to an individual clinical assessment.
What Happens at the Appointment?
At the pharmacy, a trained healthcare professional will complete a consultation before administering the vaccine. This allows the team to check that vaccination is appropriate and answer any questions you or your child may have.
The consultation may cover:
- Age and general health
- Previous chickenpox infection or vaccination
- Current and recently used medicines
- Allergies and previous vaccine reactions
- Long-term medical conditions
- Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant
- Conditions or treatments that affect the immune system
- Recent vaccinations, illness or exposure to chickenpox
Please provide accurate information during the assessment. If you have a vaccination record, medication list or relevant medical information, bring it with you.
If vaccination is suitable, it can be administered during the appointment. The healthcare professional will explain what to expect afterwards and provide any necessary aftercare advice.

Who May Not Be Suitable for Vaccination?
Chickenpox vaccination is not suitable for everyone. It may need to be postponed or avoided if the person:
- Is pregnant or planning a pregnancy soon
- Has a weakened immune system
- Uses medicines that suppress the immune system
- Has previously experienced a serious reaction to a vaccine or one of its ingredients
- Is currently unwell with a fever
- Has recently received another vaccination
- Has recently received certain blood products or treatments
This list is not exhaustive. The pharmacy professional will assess suitability using the applicable clinical guidance. If the service is unsuitable, they will explain the recommended next step.
If you or your child currently has a suspected chickenpox rash, do not attend the pharmacy without speaking to the team first. Chickenpox spreads easily and could place other patients at risk. Vaccination is intended to help prevent infection; it does not treat an active case of chickenpox.
Possible Side Effects
As with any vaccination, temporary side effects can occur. These may include soreness, redness or swelling around the injection site, a raised temperature or a mild rash. The healthcare professional will discuss relevant side effects and explain when further medical advice should be sought.
Seek urgent medical assistance if signs of a severe allergic reaction develop following vaccination. If you have questions about a previous vaccine reaction, contact the pharmacy team before booking.
Price, Deposit and Rescheduling
The private chickenpox vaccination service costs £70 in total.
A £25 non-refundable deposit is required to secure the appointment. The deposit will be deducted from the total cost of the service.
If you need to change your appointment, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice. When sufficient notice is given, the pharmacy can move the booking to another available appointment.
If the healthcare professional determines that vaccination is unsuitable, or the service cannot be completed following the initial assessment, the deposit will be retained as a consultation fee and will not be refunded.
