Free NHS Prescription Delivery

Collecting prescription medication is not always easy, particularly if you have limited mobility, a long-term health condition, caring responsibilities or difficulty travelling to the pharmacy.

Most Right Medicine Pharmacy branches offer a free NHS prescription delivery service within their local area. Once you are registered and the pharmacy has received a valid prescription, the team can dispense your medication and arrange delivery to your agreed address.

Availability, delivery areas and schedules vary between branches. Contact your local Right Medicine Pharmacy before registering to confirm that it delivers to your postcode and to learn how its service operates.

Who May Find Prescription Delivery Helpful?

Prescription delivery can provide a more convenient way to receive regular medication. It may be particularly helpful if you:

  • Have difficulty travelling to the pharmacy
  • Have a disability or reduced mobility
  • Manage a long-term health condition
  • Receive several regular medicines
  • Provide care for another person
  • Do not have someone who can collect medication for you
  • Live within a participating pharmacy’s delivery area

Eligibility and capacity may vary between branches. Speak to the pharmacy team even if you are unsure whether the service is available in your circumstances.

How Does NHS Prescription Delivery Work?

Before medication can be delivered, the pharmacy must receive a valid prescription from an authorised prescriber. Depending on the systems used by your GP practice, this may be transmitted to the pharmacy or collected under an existing arrangement.

The usual process is:

  1. You register for delivery with a participating Right Medicine Pharmacy.
  2. You request your regular medicines using the process agreed with your GP practice.
  3. Your GP reviews and authorises the prescription.
  4. The prescription reaches your chosen pharmacy.
  5. The pharmacy completes the necessary clinical and dispensing checks.
  6. Your medicines are prepared and scheduled for delivery.

Registering for delivery does not necessarily mean that the pharmacy automatically orders each repeat prescription. Unless the team specifically tells you otherwise, continue requesting your medication from your GP practice when it is due.

How Do I Register?

Contact the Right Medicine Pharmacy branch you would like to use. The team will confirm whether it offers free delivery to your address and explain the local registration process.

You may be asked to provide:

  • Your full name and date of birth
  • Your home address and postcode
  • A telephone number
  • The name of your GP practice
  • Your Community Health Index number, if available
  • Details of your regular medication
  • Relevant accessibility or communication requirements
  • Consent for the pharmacy to handle your prescriptions

Tell the team if another person manages your medication or needs to communicate with the pharmacy on your behalf. The pharmacy may need your consent before discussing confidential prescription information with them.

When Should I Order My Prescription?

Prescription delivery is intended for planned medication supplies rather than urgent requests. Allow enough time for your GP practice to authorise the prescription, for it to reach the pharmacy and for the pharmacy to obtain, dispense and deliver each item.

Ask your branch how far in advance it recommends ordering. Plan particularly carefully before bank holidays, weekends and travel, when GP and pharmacy opening hours may differ.

A delivery date cannot be confirmed until the pharmacy has received and processed the prescription. Delays may occur if:

  • Your GP has not yet authorised the request
  • You are due for a medication review or clinical monitoring
  • A requested item is not authorised for repeat issue
  • The prescriber changes or queries an item
  • A medicine needs to be specially ordered
  • An item is temporarily unavailable

If you are concerned about a delay, contact the pharmacy rather than submitting duplicate requests, as duplicates can create confusion and medicine waste.

Receiving Your Delivery Safely

The pharmacy will explain its local delivery arrangements when you register. Make sure the address, postcode and contact details it holds for you remain accurate.

Do not assume that prescription medication can be left outside, in a communal area or with another person. Medicines may require secure handover, and some items have additional storage or supply requirements. Ask your branch what happens if nobody is available to accept the delivery.

When your medicine arrives:

  • Check that the package is addressed to you
  • Review the labels and directions
  • Store each medicine as instructed
  • Check whether any items are still to follow
  • Contact the pharmacy promptly if something appears incorrect

Do not take an unfamiliar medicine or changed dose until you understand the instructions. Visit our Medicine Advice page if you need help understanding how to use a prescribed treatment.

What If My Medication Changes?

Tell the pharmacy if your GP, hospital team or another prescriber changes your medication. The pharmacy may not immediately receive information about treatment supplied or discontinued elsewhere.

Only order medicines you currently need. If you already have enough of one item, leave it off your next request where the ordering system allows. This reduces unnecessary supplies and helps prevent expired or discontinued medication from accumulating at home.

Return unwanted or expired medicines to a pharmacy for safe disposal. Do not place them in household rubbish, flush them away or pass them to another person.

Prescription Collection and Delivery

Prescription collection and prescription delivery are related but different services.

With prescription collection, the pharmacy receives or collects the authorised prescription from your GP practice and prepares the medication for you to collect from the pharmacy. With delivery, a participating branch brings the dispensed medication to an agreed address within its local delivery area.

If you can collect your medication but want to avoid travelling between your GP practice and pharmacy, our NHS Repeat Prescription Collection service may be suitable.

What If I Need Medication Urgently?

Routine delivery should not be relied upon when you have already run out of an important medicine. Contact the pharmacy or your GP practice promptly and explain what has happened.

An emergency supply may sometimes be possible, but it depends on the medicine, your circumstances and the information available to the pharmacist. It cannot be guaranteed, and normal delivery schedules may still apply.

The NHS Inform accessing medicines guide can help you identify the appropriate next step if your supply has run out.

Are NHS Prescriptions Free in Scotland?

NHS prescriptions dispensed in Scotland are free. The pharmacy’s local delivery service is also provided free of charge where it is available.

Different rules may apply to some prescriptions issued elsewhere in the UK. You can check the current position on the NHS Inform prescription charges and exemptions page.
