Private Vitamin B12 Injection Service

Vitamin B12 supports normal red blood cell production and healthy nervous-system function. Right Medicine Pharmacy provides private vitamin B12 injections for suitable adults following an individual consultation with a pharmacist.

The service costs £25 and is available at selected Right Medicine Pharmacy branches across Scotland. You do not need to be a regular customer or obtain a GP referral to request an appointment, but treatment will only be provided when the pharmacist considers it clinically suitable.

What Is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is found naturally in foods including meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. It is also added to some fortified foods and supplements.

The body needs vitamin B12 to:

  • Produce healthy red blood cells
  • Support normal nervous-system function
  • Assist normal energy-releasing metabolism
  • Support normal psychological function

A vitamin B12 injection is a form of replacement treatment. It should not be treated as a general energy boost for someone who does not have a clinical reason to receive it.

Who May Be at Risk of Vitamin B12 Deficiency?

Vitamin B12 deficiency can have several causes. Some people may not consume enough through their diet, while others cannot absorb it effectively.

Factors associated with an increased risk can include:

  • Following a vegan diet without reliable B12 supplementation
  • Eating very little food derived from animals
  • Pernicious anaemia or another autoimmune condition affecting absorption
  • Previous surgery involving the stomach or small intestine
  • Certain digestive conditions
  • Using some medicines over an extended period
  • Being older, as absorption can become less efficient

Having a risk factor does not automatically mean that you are deficient or need an injection. Dietary advice, oral supplements, blood tests or a different treatment plan may sometimes be more appropriate.

Symptoms That Require Proper Assessment

Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause symptoms such as tiredness, weakness, changes to memory or concentration, a sore tongue, pale skin, pins and needles or problems with balance. However, these symptoms can also have many other causes.

A private injection should not be used to self-diagnose unexplained tiredness or neurological symptoms. The pharmacist may recommend that you contact your GP or arrange appropriate blood tests before receiving treatment.

Seek medical advice promptly if you develop:

  • New or worsening numbness or pins and needles
  • Problems with balance, coordination or walking
  • Significant memory, concentration or behavioural changes
  • Marked weakness, breathlessness or heart palpitations
  • Symptoms that are persistent, unexplained or worsening

Neurological symptoms can sometimes occur without obvious anaemia. Prompt assessment is important because the cause needs to be established and an appropriate treatment schedule selected.

What Happens at the Pharmacy?

Your appointment begins with a private suitability consultation. The pharmacist will ask questions about your health, symptoms, diet, medicines and any previous diagnosis or treatment involving vitamin B12.

They may ask about:

  • Why you are requesting the injection
  • Previous blood-test results or a confirmed deficiency
  • Any current vitamin supplements or B12 treatment
  • Medical conditions that could affect B12 absorption
  • Medicines you currently take
  • Previous reactions to injections or their ingredients
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding or other relevant circumstances

If the pharmacist decides that treatment is suitable, the vitamin B12 injection will be administered into the muscle of the upper arm in a private consultation area.

The pharmacist will explain possible side effects, what to do if you feel unwell and whether you should seek further medical advice or monitoring.

When Might the Injection Not Be Provided?

Completing a booking does not guarantee that you will receive an injection. The pharmacist may decide not to proceed if:

  • Your symptoms require medical investigation
  • Your treatment history cannot be confirmed sufficiently
  • You may need a structured course rather than a single injection
  • An oral supplement or dietary assessment may be more appropriate
  • You have a contraindication or previous serious reaction
  • The service is not appropriate for your individual circumstances

If you already receive regular B12 injections through your GP or another healthcare provider, do not use this service to alter or supplement that schedule without advice from the clinician managing your treatment.

How Quickly Will I Notice a Difference?

There is no guaranteed timeframe. Whether symptoms improve depends on whether they are caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, the reason for the deficiency and whether a single injection forms part of an appropriate treatment plan.

Some people receiving clinically appropriate B12 replacement may notice improvement over days or weeks, while neurological symptoms can take longer. An injection may provide no noticeable benefit if the symptoms have another cause.

Does One Injection Treat Vitamin B12 Deficiency?

Not necessarily. Some people require an initial course of injections followed by maintenance treatment, while others may be advised to use oral vitamin B12. Treatment frequency depends on the cause, symptoms and clinical assessment.

Pernicious anaemia and other absorption conditions can require ongoing medically supervised treatment. A single private injection should not replace a prescribed course, follow-up blood tests or specialist care.

If you are uncertain whether testing is appropriate, ask about the availability of our private Blood Testing Service or speak to your GP. You can also visit our Medicine Advice page for general support with medicines and supplements.

Price and Booking Terms

The private vitamin B12 injection service costs £25.

The full £25 service fee is taken as a non-refundable deposit when you book. If the injection is provided, the deposit is deducted from the treatment price, leaving no additional balance for the advertised £25 service.

If you need to change your appointment, the pharmacy can reschedule it when at least 24 hours’ notice is provided.

If the pharmacist decides that treatment is unsuitable or cannot administer the injection, the £25 deposit will be retained as a consultation fee and will not be refunded.
